Welcome To Wijnskool

The Bartho Eksteen Wine Academy for Young Wine Makers was established in 2011 as a way to inspire young high school learners to develop an interest in the wine industry, with the hope of guiding them into a wine career.

THE HISTORY OF WIJNSKOOL

THE BEGINNING  |  2011

After winning the 2010 Diner’s Club Winemaker of the Year Award, Bartho decided to shift his focus into giving back to the wine industry. The Academy was started with Diner’s Club as its titled sponsor and the first grapes were harvested at the Boland Landbou High School in February 2011.

MAKING A MOVE  |  2019

Late 2018 saw the Academy re-establish its routes in the Hemel-en-Aarde Valley on Bartho’s new farm (Attaquaskloof), with the aim to serve the local Hermanus community.

LOOKING AHEAD

As from the 2020 vintage, the aim of the Wine Academy will be to educate high school learners in the basic principles of vinification in the Overberg area. The course will run for six months and includes a hands-on harvest and theory-based classes.

STATISTICS

Over 280 tons of grapes processed since 2011.

Wine Bottled

Since its inception, the Academy and its students have produced and bottled over 207 000 bottles of wine.
