WINE MAKING

 PHILOSOPHY

Bartho is a firm believer that a winemaker should spend as much time as possible in the vineyard during harvest. He sees the unique challenges of each vintage as character-building moments — ones that keep you humble, grounded, and on your knees. He is deeply committed to the terroir of Hermanus and its surroundings, which he believes to be among the most extreme and expressive in South Africa.

While passionate about his wines — and proud of the recognition they’ve received — Bartho’s pride goes far beyond awards and accolades. At the heart of the brand lies a strong family dynamic. His wife, Suné, is the creative force behind the culinary offering under the name Maná. His son, Pieter Willem, and daughter-in-law, Sol, are both carving out their own reputations as winemakers in their own right. His daughter, Shani, and son-in-law, Arno, are devoted educators shaping young minds in Hermanus — and play an equally vital role as brand ambassadors, sharing the family’s values and story with the broader community.

In early 2015, Bartho and his family relocated to their farm in the Hemel-en-Aarde Valley, where they currently reside. From here they expand their wine brand and other ventures.
